Haarlem is a city in the province Noord Holland in the westen part of the Netherlands near the Noord Zee (North Sea). Haarlem is a 20 minutes drive from Amsterdam, 40 minutes from Den Haag (The Hague), 60 minutes from Rotterdam and 10 minutes from Zandvoort (a sea side resort). Other cities near Haarlem are: historic leiden & Delft, Noordwijk, Schiedam the jenever (gin) city (such as Ketel One), Bergen aan Zee and Alkmaar with its the cheese markets. The city was more important than Amsterdam in the years 1580-1630. Haarlem center has 22 courtyards, there were more than 40 in the 17th century. The Grote Markt in Haarlem is a large square in the centre of Haarlem surrounded by historical and famous buildings like the Grote Kerk (over 80 metres tall) and the town hall. There is also a statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, the possible discoverer of book printing. As the city was home to several first class Dutch painters: Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, Pieter Claesz en Willem Claeszoon Heda, Pieter Saenredam, Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem, Hendrick Goltzius and Karel van Mander.
